Johnny Depp had already reprised his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 – before both the actor and Warner Bros confirmed his exit from the series.
Following his legal loss at the High Court last week, Depp confirmed in an Instagram statement that he had been asked to resign from Fantastic Beasts 3. “I have respected and agreed to that request,” he wrote.
The newly-delayed Fantastic Beasts 3 will no doubt be searching for Depp’s replacement as we speak, but Variety is now reporting that the actor had already begun shooting the movie.

The third Fantastic Beasts is believed to have two months of filming under its belt, with Depp already completing one scene as the dark wizard Grindelwald. Whether that scene will be cut or re-shot is unknown.
Depp’s departure from the Harry Potter spin-off series comes after the actor lost his libel case against The Sun. Depp sued the publication over a 2018 article that labelled him a “wife beater” following Amber Heard’s abuse allegations. Depp continues to strenuously deny the claims.
After the highly-publicised case was dismissed by the High Court last week, Warner Bros announced that the role of Grindelwald would be recast, and that Fantastic Beasts 3‘s release date had been pushed back to 2022.
As for who will replace Depp in the role, we’re none the wiser. We wouldn’t bet on Colin Farrell, though.
Fantastic Beasts 3 will now be released in the summer of 2022.
